Weaving for bread: a widow's story


I am a widow from Qizil Qishlaq a village in Faryab province located in the north-west of Afghanistan.  Several years ago, my husband was killed in a traffic accident, leaving me with our three children to provide for; a son who is twelve and two daughters ages seven and eight.

Mental Health Program


The mental health work of IAM started in 1996 in Herat as a response to the high suicide rate among the women of the region. At that time there was hardly any awareness and understanding of mental health issues neither in the society nor among government officials. Meanwhile the Afghan Ministry of Public Health had declared mental health care as one of its priorities.
