{"id":131,"date":"2015-10-03T10:44:40","date_gmt":"2015-10-03T10:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iam-afghanistan.org\/lcp\/?p=131"},"modified":"2015-09-12T11:15:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-12T11:15:20","slug":"131","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iam-afghanistan.org\/lcp\/2015\/10\/03\/131\/","title":{"rendered":"New resource: the LCP News Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m very pleased to announce the launch of a new LCP resource:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iam-afghanistan.org\/lcp\/NewsTexts\/\">The\u00a0LCP News Collection<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a selection of news stories\u2014mostly from Fall 2014\u2014that you can use to (i) practice reading, (ii) learn vocabulary relevant to politics, pop culture, world affairs, and security, and (iii) become familiar with\u00a0the news story genre.<\/p>\n<p>When you place your mouse over a word, there is a pop-up that has the\u00a0the pronunciation of the word in context, and the definition. There are also occasional notes on tricky words, and notes on\u00a0the\u00a0meaning and grammar of\u00a0difficult sentences. There ought to be enough there for successful self-study, but you can also go through these texts with a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you&#8217;re <em>really<\/em> behind on the news, the stories won&#8217;t\u00a0actually <em>be<\/em> news. The point of this resource is to expose you to\u00a0real world texts,\u00a0and to the most frequent words that appear, so that you can read today&#8217;s\u00a0news on your own. (This year&#8217;s political squabble is going to\u00a0be reported in pretty much the same way as last year&#8217;s political squabble!)<\/p>\n<p>These stories will present a challenge\u00a0to any\u00a0learner.
