Kandahar Noor Eye Hospital

Kandahar Noor Eye Hospital (KNEH) is a ten bed hospital that IAM NOOR opened in 2007 in cooperation with a local partner. This facility provides eye care to the southern region of Afghanistan.

Local donations have provided funding for free care for patients who are not able to pay for surgery, glasses, or medicine. The clinic is open six days a week in the mornings and surgeries are performed on the same day in the afternoon. The lens technician can also provide glasses to patients while they wait.

Poor security has kept IAM expatriate staff from working in Kandahar, but the IAM NOOR local staff has continued to operate the hospital, taking on the responsibility of most tasks and making sure the facility continues to offer high quality. KNEH currently has one eye doctor, who is assisted by two nurses and three opticians.

In 2008 KNEH saw 7853 patients and performed 654 surgeries. 2123 pairs of glasses were distributed and 1406 school children were screened for vision problems.
