The Direct Seeding project is designed to introduce new planting methods to non-irrigated farmland. The no-till method is designed to increase yield and reduce the impact of the ongoing drought.
In 2003, 120 hectares of wheat were planted at two sites about 70 km apart both north and south of Kabul. In Kabul province an experimental wheat test plot was made with 7different kinds of wheat. The best fields multiplied the seed planting rate 9 times.
