Community Development Herat

The Community Development Projects work with selected communities to increase their capacity to meet their basic needs, to encourage their continued development using their own resources, and to improve their individual and communal lives in a just and sustainable manner.

CDP started its work as one of IAM’s development projects in Herat in 1995. Projects include road construction, irrigation, water and sanitation, basic health education, veterinary and agriculture training, and literacy. CDP facilitators work along side people from the target communities for a three year cycle to promote community development. At the end of the three years the project work is handed over to the community and the project moves on to other communities. Village Development Councils are established to ensure that the development process continues after our involvement ends. A key part of the project the the effort to help communities who have received assistance pass on their training and experience to nearby communities. Approximately 2,500 families in 10 communities benefit from CDP Herat’s work
