University Eye Hospital

Located right on the campus of Kabul University, the 40 bed University Eye Hospital (UEH) started in Sept 2002. This partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education has as its focus the training of doctors to make them qualified ophthalmologists. The three year programme for doctors is challenging and demanding, yet it also ensures that the doctors who graduate are well trained and well prepared to practice ophthalmology in a difficult environment.

In addition to its training programme, the UEH also serves as the final referral site for difficult eye care cases such as retinal detachments, extensive trauma or eye tumors, from across the country. For some patients, UEH is their last hope for help. Donations of high quality equipment such as a Yag laser, A scan, B-scan, and additional operating microscopes, enable us to continue to provide quality care and services. UEH also sees a fair number of regular eye patients needing cataract, trachoma or glaucoma surgery. We see more than 40,000 and perform more than 4,000 sight-saving surgeries every year.
