MoPH Kabul Eye Hospital

When the NOOR Eye Institute was caught in the front lines of civil war in the mid 1990s, a decision was made to relocate the equipment and personnel to safer locations. After several temporary moves, the Polyclinic location in the center of Kabul was decided upon by the Ministry of Health as the site for their eye department. This IAM supported facility has blossomed into a hub of eye care services. Over 80,000 outpatients receive treatment and over 4,000 sight saving eye operations are performed yearly.

IAM continues to be involved in this hospital, building capacity through administrative, financial, and educational support.

It is our hope and goal that all the eye hospitals in Afghanistan can one day be fully self-sufficient for operational costs through the cost recovery systems now in place. We are continuing to work with the Ministry of Health to find the best way forward in this new concept of cost recovery and cost sharing, at the same time not forgetting to provide for the poor and needy.
