The IAM eye hospital in Mazar-i-Sharif was established at the request of the Ministry of Health in 1994. Since its opening it has grown and developed into one of the model health care sites in the north of Afghanistan. The 40 bed hospital serves as a referral center for northern Afghanistan and each year we see over 20,000 patients and perform more than 4,000 sight-saving surgeries.
A major part of our work involves the training of local doctors in order to ensure that people in the northern provinces have access to eye care. Over the last 13 years this has enabled IAM-trained doctors to provide limited eye care services in four different sites outside of the Mazar area; further sites are planned for the future. An eye drop facility and optical workshop are also a part of our facility in Mazar.
